Dr. Tom Jordan, Director of SEARHC Mt Edgecumbe Dental Clinic coordinated the week long clinic June 17-21. The program sponsored by The Academy of Prosthodontics, SEARHC Dental, Dentsply Dental Supply and Straumann Dental Implants was held at MEH. Materials for dentures, dental implants and provider time were all donated. A total of 17 patients received new dentures and 18 patients were seen by the oral surgeon for pre prosthetic surgery, dental implants or third molar extraction. The value of the services provided to our patients by the group was calculated at over $103,000.
Elders from our outlying villages receive highest priority for the annual clinic. The average age of the patients receiving dentures is over 72 years old. The clinic is a great benefit for our elders from out of town, who receive new dentures in four days – rather than the usual 4-5 appointments spread over 6-8 weeks.
This year, in addition to Prosthodontic specialists, there were Oral Surgeons providing dental implant services to denture patients. Not only did specialists provide direct patient care, they also provided continuing dental education with hands on training and lectures for the participating providers. SEARHC Prosthodontist Dr. Bridget Willet, LMC AEGD residents Dr. Alice Nunes, Dr. David Purcell, Dr. Todd Garcia and Dr. Mark Desjarlai participated along with 8 other specialists and doctors.
With help from SEARHC Community Transformation Grants, Gastineau Elementary School P.E. Teacher Dirk Miller was able to obtain a grant to purchase 16 bikes. He also purchased loaner helmets for kids to use. The bikes are being used in a number of programs including an after school program called Bike Club started in Spring this year. The bike programs aim at getting kids active and outside. Bike Club participants liked getting muddy hitting puddles and the fresh air.
National Certified Nursing Assistants Week was celebrated June 13 - 20th. The 2013 theme was “Nursing Assistants @ the Heart of Care.” Staff at MEH also celebrated our Clinical Assistants, Surgical Techs and Perioperative Surgical Tech during the same week. We have many, many wonderful staff!
