July 13 2010The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Health Promotion department is hosting free health screenings for adults age 18 and older on Thursday and Friday, July 29-30, at the Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital Litehouse Cafeteria conference rooms in Sitka. SEARHC’s Health Promotion will be at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska picnic from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 16, to schedule 20-minute appointments for their health screenings at the end of the month. Any person unable to schedule an appointment on Friday should contact SEARHC Health Educator Renae Mathson at 966-8797. The biometric health screenings involve a simple blood test that gives people their non-fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and blood pressure results. Health professionals will be available to discuss screening results with patients. While the biometric health screenings don't replace a person's annual visit to their medical provider, the screening results can let people know if they are at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke.
