August 01 2011

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Haa Toowóo Náakw Hít outpatient behavioral health clinic is happy to announce the addition of child psychiatrist Carmen M. Sugai, M.D., to its clinical staff. She is SEARHC’s only child psychiatrist. Over the past 15 months, Dr. Sugai twice spent three months working at the clinic as a traveling psychiatrist. And now she and her husband, Edward, have decided to stay in Sitka. “I have not worked with a more thorough and conscientious child psychiatrist,” said Rand West, Psy.D., SEARHC Sitka Mental Health Director. “We are indeed lucky to have her.” “I am excited about the opportunity to serve here as well as settling in Sitka,” Dr. Sugai said. Dr. Sugai earned her Bachelor of Science degree in premedical studies and her Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She completed a psychiatry residency at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., and a child psychiatry fellowship at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. She spent several years in private practice in Louisiana, and also worked at the Louisiana State Hospital in Jackson and the Southeast Louisiana State Hospital in Mandeville. She worked at SEARHC in Sitka as a locums (traveling) provider from May to September 2010 and again from January to April 2011 before joining the permanent staff. Dr. Sugai is board certified in adult psychiatry and child psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Sugai’s special medical interests include the evaluation of FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorders) and child psychiatry. She also enjoys quilting, hiking and drawing.
