SEARHC dietitians host free family fun night on nutrition

March 01 2010

Three SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) dietitians will host a free family fun night on nutrition from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, at Centennial Hall. The dietitians — SEARHC Community Dietitian Genevieve Armstrong, SEARHC Ethel Lund Medical Center Dietitian Lisa Fenn and SEARHC WIC Dietitian Susan Hennon — are hosting the event as part of National Nutrition Month. There will be activity stations for young and old alike, and people are encouraged to come out and play with their food. You can try your hand at planting seeds, making spice blends and learning more about good nutrition from three registered dietitians. The National Nutrition Month theme for March 2010 is “Nutrition From the Ground Up,” so Darren Snyder from the Juneau office of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Office will lead a planting station and offer plant-growing tips for our damp climate. You will be able to take your seed starts home to grow inside for a month or two until it’s safe to plant them outside in your gardens. National Nutrition Month is an annual event sponsored by the American Dietetic Association (http://www.eatright.org/) to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
