Juneau takes Eagles vs. Ravens Wellness Challenge online
The Eagles vs. Ravens Wellness Challenge has gone online, making it easier for Juneau residents to record their points from home or if they have to travel.
The 2007 contest takes place from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30. Online registration runs from July 15 through Aug. 15, and the Eagles vs. Ravens Wellness Challenge website is http://www.searhc.org/evr/.
Eagles vs. Ravens began as a walking contest, but it's been expanded to take a more holistic approach toward improving a person's overall health. People still can earn points for doing physical activity, such as walking, cycling, running, kayaking or even playing hopscotch. But they also can earn points for other wellness activities, such as quitting tobacco, improving their nutrition, getting annual check-ups, reducing their stress, drinking water, mentoring, or for taking part in community or cultural events.
The kick-off celebration for the 2007 challenge takes place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, at the Tlingit-Haida Community Center, 3235 Hospital Dr. The celebration will feature registration, Native dancing, food and t-shirts for the first 400 registrants. About two hours into the celebration, participants will walk over to Twin Lakes to hold a play session for kids and adults at the new Project Playground.
"Eagles vs. Ravens brings individuals to a healthy common ground," says Alan Travasso, SEARHC Juneau Health Promotion Manager. "The past Eagle vs. Raven events set a high bar of expectation in the community. This year, the 'healthy community feeling' will shine through, and that's the exciting part."
Besides the kick-off event, this year's Eagles vs. Ravens includes several weekly events such as family swims, walking clubs and indoor rock climbing. An open house takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the SEARHC Juneau Health Promotion Office. The closing ceremony and awards will be presented from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Tlingit-Haida Community Center. For information, call Alan at 364-4458.
