Home Safety Tips
- Use a holiday or anniversary as a reminder to change your alarm batteries.
- Know how to escape: plan your route and practice as a family. Make sure elders, infants and the disabled are in rooms with easy escape routes.
- Check for frayed or excessive wear on electrical wires and for damaged sockets.
- Never leave the house with candles burning.
- Never use extension cords as permanent electrical solutions.
- You are at risk of electrical fire if: fuses "blow" often, lights flicker, outlets spark.
- Using a gas range, grill or camp stove for a heat source may cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Never place gas generators near or inside your living space.
- Headache, dizziness and nausea may indicate carbon monoxide poisoning: go outside immediately!
- Protect our elders! When visiting elders, check for carbon monoxide and fire hazards.
- Have your wood-burning chimney, furnace and boiler cleaned annually.
