Around the Consortium

Kasaan and Prince of Wales Island

The Prince of Wales Island Culture Camp takes place on Aug. 10-14 in Kasaan for youth ages 10-18 (youth ages 9 and younger are allowed to camp onsite, but must camp with their parents). This event teaches Tlingit and Haida language, art, song, dance, and the harvesting, preparation and preservation of subsistence foods. The camp is sponsored by the Organized Village of Kasaan (542-2230), and campers needing assistance with travel can contact Kerri Sheakley of the Central Council of Tlingit and Indian Tribes of Alaska at 463-7182.

Kake

The 19th annual Kake Culture Camp takes place from July 15-21, a Sunday through Saturday. This event teaches youth Tlingit culture and traditions. Also, the Kake Dog Salmon Festival takes place Saturday, July 28. This event features games, food and Tlingit canoe races. Haines and Klukwan

The Eagles vs. Ravens Wellness Challenge for Haines and Klukwan continues through Saturday, Aug. 5. The event started May 5. Haines participants can turn in their points to Mandy Ramsey at 766-6317, and Klukwan participants can turn in their miles to Michael Adams at 766-6335. The Haines celebration potluck is at noon on Monday, Aug. 6, at Tlingit Park. The Klukwan celebration tentively is set for Tuesday, Aug. 7, but contact Adams for exact details.

Haines

The "Rally For a Cure Summer Scramble" Golf Outing for Breast Cancer Awareness takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, at Valley of the Eagles Golf Links in Haines. This is a nine-hole event with three golfers to a team. The entry fee is $35 (with $20 of that going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research). Sitka

The Alaska Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine is hosting 2007 Annual Meeting and Symposium "Exercise as Medicine" on July 18-21 at Harrigan Centennial Hall. This event is open to medical professionals needing continuing education credits and to the general public. Presentations will be in the fields of sports medicine, exercise physiology and preventive medicine, and guest speakers include Steve Blair, William Haskell, Anne McTiernan and Kent Adams. Juneau

The Eagles vs. Ravens Wellness Challenge takes place from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30 in Juneau, and this year the contest will be online at www.searhc.org/evr so people in other SEARHC communities also can participate. People can earn points for physical activity and other wellness activities, such as quitting tobacco, improving their nutrition, getting annual check-ups, mentoring, drinking water, reducing stress or taking part in community or cultural events. A kick-off event is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, starting at the Central Council building and finishing at Twin Lakes. Consortium-wide

The late-summer and fall 2007 schedule for the mobile mammogram van includes stops in Hoonah (Aug. 21-24), Haines (Sept. 4-13), Skagway (Sept. 17-19), Klawock (Sept. 26-28), Craig (Oct. 1-3), Klawock again (Oct. 4-12) and Metlakatla (Oct. 18-24). The travel dates are tentative, due to ferry schedules, so check with the local clinic for updates. The mobile mammogram program is sponsored by the SEARHC Breast and Cervical Health Program and by Bartlett Memorial Hospital.
