Mark Gorman named interim President/CEO

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Board of Directors on Tuesday selected Vice President of Community Health Services Mark Gorman as interim President/CEO. Gorman will oversee the transition period following Saturday's sudden death of President/CEO Ken Brewer.

"Our thanks to Mark for accepting this huge responsibility," said Jan Hill, Chairperson of the SEARHC Board of Directors. She said the Board's selection was unanimous.

"I am honored to fill this role during a critical and sad time in SEARHC's history," Gorman said. "Ken Brewer was ardently pursuing the vision set forward by the SEARHC Board of Directors. I will work to my best abilities to ensure that we continue on this path. I also look forward to working with the Board in its process of recuiting and selecting a new CEO."

Gorman has been Vice President of Community Health Services since 1989, and he was Deputy Director of Community Health Services from 1987-89. His division provides services to 19 rural villages in Southeast Alaska. These services include training and supervising community health aides and community wellness advocates, providing medical, dental and behavioral health services, residential substance abuse treatment, emergency medical services and training, community family service workers, environmental health, injury prevention and health promotion.

In addition to his work with SEARHC, Gorman has worked with Refugees International in Sri Lanka and Iraq, and worked with the International Rescue Committee in Bosnia, northern Iraq and Thailand. He was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in the Central African Republic and worked with the Peace Corps in Hawai'i and Papua New Guinea. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Sitka from 1978-80. During his tenure at SEARHC, Gorman served on the boards for the Alaska Center for Rural Health (1991-2002), the Alaska Public Health Association (1994-98) and the Alaska Primary Care Association (2001-04).

Gorman earned a Master of Public Health degree in health education from the University of Hawai'i. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology, with a minor in journalism, from the University of Colorado.
