About externships
The SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital offers several 12-week externships each year for pharmacy students. The areas of focus of the externships are inpatient, ambulatory and clinical pharmacy. These are usually divided up into two-week rotations but are flexible, depending on your past experience and interest.
A staff pharmacist serves as preceptor for each student. At least 20% of the externship time is spent in one-on-one instruction offered by our professional staff.
What you need to know to apply
- Externships are usually scheduled at least six months in advance. Fall is a good time to apply for the following school year (beginning in the summer).
- Externships can be for any twelve-week period during the year, but being flexible with the time requested can help you secure a position. If you really want to get a taste of Alaska living, or you're late in applying, you may want to consider the time around Christmas (November through January).
- Requests for positions made by a school's externship coordinator have a higher priority. We will be requesting, and will rely heavily on, the recommendation of externship coordinators.
- There are no more than two twelve-week clerkships available at any one time. An attempt to stagger rotations is made, and we try to make sure no two students are from the same school at any one time.
Housing and meals
Housing is provided for pharmacy students on the Mt. Edgecumbe campus. Meals are also provided in the hospital staff cafeteria at no cost to the student.
